Cannot Install Program

Hi,
I have Java version 8 on my computer (Windows). I donated to the program development in the store and received the email with the link to download the file. It required me to select a program to open the file (.6-r2331[1]) and the list included Adobe Reader, Notepad, etc. I tried different programs, but none of them worked except Word - I thought that this file might be an information sheet and required a program to be associated with it. What opens in Word is an unreadable file and there is no other program it works with to open and install. Is Java Runtime separate from Java? I’ve never had a problem like this before. I can’t install the program.
