java -version in a DOS window shows I have java 8+ (12). but I get the error shown in the screenshot.

Good news!
Oracle Java update on October 15 (version 8.231) now allows Gantt Project to run. When I turned on my PC this morning, the Java updater asked me to update and after installing the updated JRE, Gantt Project starts up.
