I am starting to use milestones as delivery dates for parts of my projects.
I’d like to be able to slide them around in the main timeline window rather than going into the task properties and changing a date in there.
how do I do this?

You can drag any task, including milestones, using regular mouse drag gesture (that is, holding the left button and moving mouse around) with Ctrl button hold pressed.
You can also edit the start date directly in the task table, without opening the task properties dialog.
Of course, this makes sense only when constraints, if any, allow for changing the task dates.
Mmm. That’s exactly how I figured it should work, but try as I might, I cannot seem to drag the milestones. Let me try again.
It seems I can drag it backwards (i.e. to an earlier date) but not forwards. Any reason for that?

I see that the cursor looks like two arrows ↔ which means that you’re trying to resize the task (change its start or end date and change the duration). This makes no real sense for milestones, but apparently when you start this interaction closer to the left corner of the diamond, it works and really changes the milestone start date, but keeps its duration as zero. Effectively, this is “move backwards”.
For move interaction you need to position the mouse pointer over the diamond center, so that it looks as a hand (or something similar on other platforms)
See the screencast below showing these resize and move interactions applied to the regular tasks and milestones.
This is clearly a usability issue. I submitted a new ticket into the issue tracker:
This doesn’t work for me. I am on a W10 machine if that makes any difference.
I can move milestones backwards, but not forwards.
It seems holding CTRL and hovering cursor over milestone (so it changes to a finger) enables me to move them backwards AND forwards, so this seems to be the way to do it.
This is what I wrote in the first reply, no?

Reading back, yes! D’oh.
I tried that, but it seemed to affect other milestones too, but I have now realised that holding CTRL effectively adds to your selection, so if you don’t have the row with the highlighted milestone selected, and then you select a different milestone on a different row, it selects them both, and drags both!
I do think there is room for improvement with usability.
But apologies for wasting your time and not checking properly.
